Days under the pillow, days above sleep

country

Japan

Year

2003

Everyone sleeps and wakes up. Sometimes we dream, repeat that.

Is sleep a continuation of being awake, or is it the daily activities that are a continuation of sleep?

Sleeping and occasional dreaming are common to all of us, the rest is …

What is certain may not be what happens while we are awake, but sleep.

This installation consists of photographs and graffiti on the wall. All the photographs used here, including the tatami mats on the floor, were printed on the Epson large format printer.

I made it possible for visitor to step on tatami mats, which are a symbol of where Japanese people sleep and live. As a floating everyday life, I scattered on the wall snapshots I had taken in my life up to that point, as well as everyday notes that scribbled on the back of flyers or transcribe blackboard.

One unexpected and memorable episode, during the exhibition was that, even though I told the viewers that it was okay to step on the tatami mats because they were fake, many people (Japanese) took off their shoes anyway.
